Able to bypass CleanBrowsing DNS by adding 1.1.1.1 in Static in WiFi settings

Forums General Open Discussion Able to bypass CleanBrowsing DNS by adding 1.1.1.1 in Static in WiFi settings

I added the CleanBrowsing family filter DNS (IPv4) in my WiFi Router. When the WiFi IP settings are set to DHCP, the filters work but when I change the IP settings to custom/static as shown in the screenshots below the device bypasses the CleanBrowsing filters and can access any website or VPN. This makes the router settings pointless. How do I prevent it?

Either do not allow the user access to change DNS settings on the device or if you have a powerful enough router you can create rules to for DNS queries to only work with Cleanbrowsing servers.

    Hi

This is by design how DNS works. Here is an article that explains it in more detail: https://cleanbrowsing.org/2022/08/the-dns-communication-hierarchy/

But Jake has the right answer. Either a) don’t allow local DNS changes, or b) force DNS at the router level.

    Thanks
